"Idea and planning 1961 - 1983"
Politicians and engineers develop a plan for a new rail tunnel linking the north and south of Switzerland in the 1960s. The primary motives behind this alternative to building more motorways are increasing goods transport volumes and shorter journey times for passengers. However, its realisation is hindered by falling transport demand in the 1970s, conflicting regional interests and the opening of the Gotthard road tunnel in 1980.
