The funding debate heats up

The NRLA is expensive. In 2004 Max Friedli (Director of the Federal Office of Transport, left), Pierre Andre Meyrat (Finance Administration, centre) and Peter Siegenthaler (Director of the Finance Administration) discuss new additional costs. (2004, Keystone)

In 2003 a report concludes that the costs of the Gotthard line could rise by 516 million francs and those of the Lötschberg by just under 300 million. Funding for the NRLA has been the subject of intense discussion since the late 1980s by the supervisory delegation, the Federal Office of Transport, working groups within the Administration, and construction management. In 2014 the Federal Office of Transport estimates the costs at 18.2 billion francs (at 1998 prices).

« The estimated final cost of all NRLA projects together as at 31 December 2003 is CHF 15,811 million. »
